Jan ‘The King of Kicks’ Kus 1st Dan

Jan started karate training in his home country of Czech Republic between 1987 – 1990 where he achieved Green belt. He also studied Tai Chi Chuan for a year before moving to England.
Once he had settled in Sussex he joined Seaford Karate Club in around 2005. He trained hard alongside Sensei Lee, Matt and Kieran before passing his Shodan black belt in 2013 under the watchful eye of the ASKA grading panel.
Jan is the Director of South Coast Pools who service and maintain swimming pools and hot tubs throughout Sussex.
He has always enjoyed karate but by nature Jan is a pacifist. He hates confrontation and has never been in a real fight in his entire life. Jan also gets ‘stage fright’ and as such he doesn’t enjoy competition or public performances, although somehow he always ends up getting involved and giving his best for the club. He says he ‘Truly loves Seaford Karate Club and all those who train with him and take part’.
Despite this, Jan is flexible and strong with great kicking ability and he has represented the club in karate demonstrations and competition many times facing top level competitors. Jan has won the club championships individual kumite in 2010, and been on top of the winners podium on many occasions.
His kind and quiet nature make him an understanding instructor and he’s a very popular with all the students. He takes time to explain techniques properly and if he doesn’t know the answer he will have the humility to ask others. His many years of karate training combined with his coaching experience and relaxed manner makes him a favoured and respected instructor. He is a regular member on the grading panel and we are very proud to have Jan as one of our instructors.
